Dr. Belayet Khan

Belayet Khan was born and raised in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He attended Notre Dame College and studied Geography to receive his BA Honors and MA degrees from Jahangirnagar University. To enhance his education he came to Canada and received a Master’s degree in Physical Geography from the University of Windsor, Ontario in 1980. He moved from Canada and attended the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to receive the Ph.D. degree in 1985. Belayet Khan has always been keen in the profession of teaching and interacting with students. He joined the University of Wyoming in 1985 and taught there as a graduate faculty member for one year. In 1986, Belayet Khan accepted a fulltime teaching position in the Department of Geology and Geography at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston and taught there for almost 30 years. After his retirement in December 2015, he has been teaching one or two classes each semester as an Emeritus Faculty. Belayet’s special academic interests are in the areas of environmental issues, meteorology, climatology, conservation, culture, and pollution studies. Belayet Khan and his family enjoy traveling and they continue to live in Charleston, Illinois. His family members include his wife and three children. Apart from professional activities, he is locally involved with the Muslim student community and he is a frequent guest speaker at the university.
